12AM Agency Our method

AI visibility / The 12AM method

Know what
the answer
actually shows.

Our AI visibility method records the questions, answers, and sources behind a finding. See what we measure, how we compare observations, and where the evidence stops.

01 / Define the observation

Known vs. chosen

Being identified is different from being recommended.

We distinguish four descriptive levels in the questions we review. They are observations about an answer, not promised stages of growth.

01

Invisible

Ask by name and AI cannot reliably identify who you are.

Not reliably identified
02

Findable

Ask by name and AI answers — but it does not volunteer your firm.

Identified when asked by name
03

Named

AI brings your firm up when the buyer never mentioned your name.

Mentioned without a branded prompt
In this framework, “Named” means an unprompted mention. A citation is a separate observation: an answer can link to a page without recommending the firm.

Read the measure before the number.

Mention or appearance rate
How often the answers name the firm within a defined sample. Read the report’s counting rule and denominator before comparing percentages.
Citations
Source links recorded in the answers. A linked page can be evidence for an answer without a recommendation of the firm.
Recommendations
Answers that put the firm forward for consideration. Count these separately from mentions and source links, using the stated review criteria.
Signal Density Score
12AM’s assessment of the signals reviewed in the Diagnostic. A score of 38/100 is not a 38% AI-answer appearance rate or a forecast of leads.

Keep question wording, platform, date, sample size, and counting rules with each comparison. Inquiries and signed matters require separate analytics and intake records.

02 / Follow the source families

An explanation of the work beneath the answer

One question.
A network of evidence.

Your website is one source. Profiles, reviews, legal directories, and independent coverage add context. We examine how that record represents your firm.

01 / Your website

Service pages, attorney bios, and client questions establish the record your firm publishes.

These six source families contain the 16 signals 12AM reviews in the Diagnostic. This is an illustrative pathway — not an engine trace, ranking formula, or live audit.

03 / Inspect the 16 signals

16 signals · proprietary weighting model

Sixteen signals. Three evidence layers.

12AM reviews sixteen signals across three evidence layers: what you publish, the profiles you control, and what independent sources say about you. We publish what we evaluate; the weighting model and scoring logic remain proprietary to 12AM.

Bigger does not automatically mean more visible to AI. Large firms often have more evidence because scale creates more reviews, mentions and coverage. But evidence can be built deliberately.

Signal-density bands in the Diagnostic are descriptive observations, not proven thresholds. Scoring weights are 12AM's stated method.

04 / The measurement register

Seven instruments.
One evidence standard.

These are complementary ways to investigate the record, not seven sequential steps. The report identifies the questions, platforms, dates, and scope behind its findings.

  1. 01

    Intake scan

Establish the starting view of your firm and competitors.

Record the scope and baseline before comparing later runs.
  2. 02

    Tracking panel

Repeat an agreed set of buying questions.

Preserve the wording. Record the platform and observation date.
  3. 03

    Deep research pass

Investigate evidence beyond the tracking-panel results.

Distinguish supporting sources, missing evidence, and assumptions.
  4. 04

    Retrieval map

Inspect pages surfaced on commercially relevant questions.

Keep source URLs with the findings they support.
  5. 05

    Four-engine naming test

Compare responses across ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and Perplexity.

Separate mentions, citations, and recommendations in the recorded answers.
  6. 06

    Link and content forensics

Examine backlink, content, and organic-search records.

Keep the underlying exports and observation window available.
  7. 07

    Direct inspection

Check crawler access, page markup, profiles, and credentials.

Verify the source page or credential issuer directly.

A report must state its own sample size. A prompt count or page count from one engagement does not define every Diagnostic.

back to the source.

Inside the evidence

A finding you can trace.

A visibility claim should lead back to a question and a recorded observation. Here is one buyer scenario from our redacted Diagnostic sample.

  1. Start with buyer context.A specific need, rather than a broad keyword.
  2. Read the comparison.See the figures printed in the source report.
  3. Keep the limits visible.A naming gap does not explain its cause.

07 / Compare carefully

A repeatable process.
An honest conclusion.

AI answers can change with wording, platform, location, and date. We repeat the procedure and document changes; we do not promise identical answers.

01 / Comparison

Keep the baseline visible.

Use the same agreed questions for follow-up comparisons. Record any changes in platform, scope, or collection conditions so readers can judge comparability.

02 / Scoring

Separate judgment from proof.

The scoring weights reflect 12AM’s method. They remain proprietary. They do not predict recommendations, leads, or revenue.

03 / Outcomes

A citation does not establish a signed case.

A source link, a mention, and a recommendation describe different observations. Business outcomes require separate analytics and intake evidence.

04 / Publication

Inclusion does not prove selection.

A directory listing or article adds to the public record. Its presence does not establish that an AI system will cite or recommend your firm.

  2. What are the underlying counts and observation dates?
  3. Does the result describe a mention, citation, or recommendation?
  4. Which original sources can I inspect?
  5. What remains uncertain, and what would change the recommendation?
